Remembering John Lennon

November 29th, 2010 by David Crane

John Winston Ono Lennon MBE: 9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980

It’s so hard to ‘imagine’ that it has been thirty years since John was taken away from us in such a mindless act of insanity at the hands of one of his so-called fans. I remember the day so clearly when I heard the news from my step-father, himself a huge Beatles/Lennon fan, and a major influence on my radio career. He was devastated! As a thirteen year old boy the news wasn’t a major impact on me at the time, but I felt the emotion and loss in my own way as the world mourned his passing.

Thirty years on and I have lived a life surrounded by and, at times, dictated and directed by music. I have learned to appreciate the pain and anguish in many of the songs that most people take for granted as “just a song”. My passion for The Beatles and John Lennon has grown to an almost obsessive state, and will remain with me forever.

To mark the 30th anniversary of John’s passing I will be playing numerous songs during my show on Ace Radio. These will vary from Beatles songs sung by Lennon to solo songs from Lennon himself, and also cover versions of Lennon songs by many of the artists who were influenced by him. Some people may not agree with some of the covers I have chosen, but I feel it is a very fitting way to pay tribute to a man who can honestly be considered a true music legend.

May he forever rest in peace!
